Pierre Jallatte Jallatte takes over a galosh factory in the Cévennes and sets up the Jallatte company in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort, in a Vauban-inspired fort. Built between 1687 and 1689, the fort's main function was to serve as a place of safety and surveillance for the town's Protestants. During a trip to the United States, he discovered the first work safety shoes and was the first to import the idea to France.
